Yea another home network standard
I want to believe in this. I really do! Intel, TI, Panny and others have formed a group attempting to set standards for home networking, using the wiring that is already found in the majority of homes (power, telephone and coax).
The promise of a “Smart Home” is as old as computing. Many companies have come and gone (and a few are still around) promising to provide a painless way to connect all of our home electronics, appliances, etc. Several attempts at establishing standards have been tried and failed. The problem hasn’t been about technology, it’s been about intellectual property and ownership.
So forgive me if I remain skeptical that this latest attempt to establish a standard, noble in intention as it may be, fails once again to deliver a solution where I can just buy any device from any manufacturer, plug it in and have it recognized by all my other devices. It might be fair to ask if this is important anymore in the era of wireless and zero-conf? Wireless is certainly not without its faults and has not delivered on the promise of the smart home.
I wish the Home Grid Forum luck. I’ll be watching with a hopeful eye.
