RIP Jerry Karl

This is a personal post. The name Jerry Karl won’t mean much to most people. Open wheel racing fans may have memories of him from the 70′s and early 80′s when he was part of the Indy series. he made 6 starts at Indianapolis and many other races in an interesting, independent career that included relationships with the late great Smokey Yunick.

Jerry was a close friend and business associate of my father outside of racing. His other passion was aviation. He loved flying anything, particularly helicopters. Jerry’s son Jimmy and I were very close, and Jimmy was tragically killed in a private plane crash when I was around 18 years old.

Jerry died on the 16th of February from injuries he suffered in a car accident. He was 66 years old. RIP my friend.
